What is a hidden object game?

A hidden object game is a puzzle where you find certain things hidden in a busy picture or room. On paper this is the classic seek and find book. On a phone or tablet the picture can move: you can zoom in, scroll around or, in a 3D game, turn the whole room to look behind the furniture. Each find gives a small happy moment, and the level ends when everything has been found.

Why do kids love seek and find games?

Seek and find games are easy to start: the rules fit in one sentence, so even kids aged 5 can begin without reading. There is no fast reflex test and no opponent, which makes the game feel fair. Every find is a clear win that the child earned by looking carefully. Many kids also enjoy the quiet: it is a game you can play slowly, curled up on the sofa or in the back seat of a car.

Looking for small details is also good practice in paying attention. Kids learn to scan a scene in order, to check corners and to look again when they missed something the first time.

What should parents look for in a hidden object game?

A good hidden object game for kids is calm, free of ads and safe to play offline. Check these 5 things before you install one:

Google Play sets the same bar for every app in its family program:

“Monetization and advertising in your app must not have deceptive content or be designed in a way that will result in inadvertent clicks from child users.”

Which hidden object games suit which age?

The best hidden object game is the one that matches your child’s age.

Ages 5 to 7: choose big, bright scenes with few objects at a time, and play the first levels together. Ages 8 to 10: kids can usually play alone; rooms they can turn and zoom keep it interesting. 11 and up: more objects, smaller hiding spots and stars to earn for a faster round add a nice challenge.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents “develop a plan that takes into account the health, education and entertainment needs of each individual child as well as the whole family”.

Our own seek and find game, Meowhide, puts these ideas into numbers: 75 kittens hide in 5 cozy 3D rooms across 75 levels, each level gives up to 3 stars, and the game has 0 ads, 0 timers and 0 personal data.
